Some people encourage others by being optimistic about a situation. Making the other person feel that there is a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how dim it may seem. Some leaders encourage their peers by making them feel that there is still hope no matter how little it is. Encouragement by optimism, as what I want to call it, makes people feel that things can be done no matter how impossible it may seem.
Encouragement by pessimism on the other hand is the exact opposite. As the term implies, there are some leaders who encourages their members by discouraging them, challenging them to do the best and reach the goal. These leaders discourage their team to challenge them to do their best and squeeze out the best in them. They like using negative words, making their peers feel that they are the worst in the world. Though not necessarily meaning it that way, they discourage their team as a challenge.
Personally though, I believe that the positive approach is still more effective in reaching your goal. Though some people would react positively to discouragements, not everyone would. Besides, pessimism does not always give way to positive results. More often that not it demoralizes the team and makes it even harder for the group to reach its goal.
Look at it this way, if you are the coach of a basketball team and you know that the other side is winning and you barely have enough time to win the game, you do not tell your team that you will surely lose right? You will never tell them, "It's over now. We'll never win. We're done for" or "It's impossible to win now. The other team will win for sure." If your team hears you saying this, what do you think will their reaction be?
It is always better to set the right tone in order to get the right result. If you want the team to think positively, you have to be positive. If you want the team to win you have to drive them to victory not by crushing their spirits but by lifting it up when they already feel down and discouraged. Remember that you can never get a positive result by being negative.
and this is just the way the world goes.
